Dungeonears Guide to SHAME

LEGEND

MD = Magic Locked Door
Up Arrow = Ladder Up
Down Arrow = Ladder Down
scattered dots = Poisonous Swamp
Squares and Rectangles = Mostly Bridges over water, in Lv 1 they represent a building
XX Cross Section = Spider Webs

This dungeon is located just west of Britannia and can only be reached by dropping a skiff in a river leading into an impassable section of the mountains surrounding the city.  Before starting it would be a good idea to have everyone in your party equipped with "Swamp Boots" as nearly all of the passages in this dungeon require your party to walk threw patches of poisonous muck to reach the end.  Also (wile not required) a good portion of empty carry space is nice to have as quite a bit of gold can be made by visiting this dungeon.  One can find gold nuggets strewn about almost at random and with the liberal use of a pick or shovel more nuggets will spawn quite regularly if your patent enough to earn cash this way.  If you don't have a digging tool, quite a few nuggets can still be found on the ground as one travels about (i collected nearly 40 in the first two levels alone without putting any effort into it at all).  Also as a side note, make sure you hold on to some of your food till you get to the last level of the cave, read below for why.

Be weary when visiting Shame as monsters of all shapes and sizes lurk in these passages at a rather alarming frequency (I myself was not paying attention and got ambushed by 3 reapers that "Magic Arrowed" my already wounded Avatar, killing him before i even knew what was happening)

Aside from the gold that can be acquired (which is considerable) and what can be found on slain monsters, there isn't much treasure here.  There is a magic Bow on the 3rd level (although getting there is kind of out of the way) and several mundane items in the building at the vary beginning of Lv 1.

At the center of Lv 4 you can find the NPC Ybarra.  He is necessary to complete the main quest, as he holds a piece of Captain Hawkins Treasure Map.

Level 1

NOTE: Take the south most ladder to reach Ybarra.

Level 2

Nothing special about this level.

Level 3

To reach Ybarra fallow the path around to the North most ladder.

Note: Continuing allong the tunnel heading North will eventually take you to a small spiders den where you will find a Magic Bow locked in the webs.

Level 4

At the point indicated on the map you will find the pirate Ybarra.  He has been down there for a wile and has completely run out of food (a fact he brings up with every other word of his dialog) he will offer to trade the map piece to you in exchange for a few mouthfuls of anything you have.

Note: If you like exploring the dialog of the NPC's in U6 this guy can be kind of a pain ... his dialog stops every few lines where he begs for more to eat.  If at any time you refuse to give him some he will abruptly end whatever conversation you where having with him and run off howling in despair.  He WILL eat you out of house and home if you let him ... you could bring a farmers market down there with you and it still would not slake his hunger for more ... Just FYI.

Addendum

I have in my possession some pages from the original Origin Strategy Guide for this game.  the guide was presented as a Journal written in the words of two NPC's found in the U6 world "Mandrake" and "Penumbra."  The standard Text is in the words of Mandrake ... and the Italics are Penumbras additions.  This part doesn't really add anything important, its just a fun bit of flavor for those interested in the story.

Now this is my kind of dungeon.  Not that I'm normally interested in going into dungeons at all, but this was different.  Sionnach convinced me to go down there looking for gold with him, and I have to admit, he was right.  There were nuggets of it just lying around on the ground all over, and more to be found with shovel or pick.  True, there were bats and rats and a few alligators down there, but we didn't have too much trouble.  And we both had swamp boots for wading through the muddy parts.  It was a most profitable excursion, and I had quite a nice visit with Terri at the mint in Britain afterwords.
** At the very bottom of this dungeon, someone wanders lost and hungry.  He needs your help. **
