Dungeonears Guide to SPIDER CAVE

LEGEND

Up Arrow = Ladder Up
Down Arrow = Ladder Down
XX Cross Section = Spider Webs

This dungeon can be found immediately south west of Empath Abbey (and pretty darn close to it as well).  Outside of it you will run into a small gathering of bats and giant spiders however only the spider types are found inside.  There are no real quest reasons to go here (at least not directly) but it has decent treasure for the dungeon size.

In particular this map is best suited to lower level groups as giant spiders make a decent challenge for Lv 1 and 2 hirelings and players with out too much risk of character death.  Also the caves proximity to Empath Abbey (and the healer Stephanie in particular) allow for a quick recovery should you get a little in over your head.  It is also one of the few places where you can find a Magic Helm as part of dungeon treasure and due to the small size of the cave, acquiring one takes vary little effort or commitment.

Note:  In addition to monsters and treasure, veterans of U6 will note that most spider lairs usually spawn a large amount of the "Spider Silk" spell casting regnant.  This cave is by far the easiest place to gather large amounts of it quickly should you need some (like for example when your trying to complete the Hot Air Balloon Quest)

Level 1

for low level party's or solo players who are not quite strong enough to take on all of the monsters at once, try ducking into the small room to the east of the entrance ladder.  you can block up the area and force the spiders to come at you one at a time.  But watch out, as spiders will also spawn in that room as well ... and if your not careful you may get boxed in and not be able to escape.  if this happens pull back and allow the monsters to enter the room then walk around them as the path clears and bolt to the exit.

Level 2

here you will find the majority of the "spider silk" the cave has to offer.  Along with the bodies of many of the Giant Spiders victims.  I have noted the locations of bodies with loot on them on the map.
Corpse 1 - Leather Helm, Leather Armor, Wood Shield, Spear, Sword
Corpse 2 - Swamp Boots, Sling, Club
Corpse 3 - Chain Mail, Crossbow, Main Gauche
Corpse 4 - Halberd
Corpse 5 - Spiked Collar, Magic Helm, Gems x6
Marker 6 - Spiked Collar (on ground)

Addendum

I have in my possession some pages from the original Origin Strategy Guide for this game.  the guide was presented as a Journal written in the words of two NPC's found in the U6 world "Mandrake" and "Penumbra."  The standard Text is in the words of Mandrake ... and the Italics are Penumbras additions.  This part doesn't really add anything important, its just a fun bit of flavor for those interested in the story.

By now you probably think I'm going to tell you some romantic story about how i found myself trapped in a spider web, but managed to draw my dagger, cut myself free, and escape.  Well it's just not so.  It was Johann who did that, and he told me all about it.  Apparently the web ;)s aren't too hard to hack through if you've got a good weapon, and as long as there aren't any spiders gnawing on you leg while you try it.  Johann said it looked like some of the bodies down there still had equipment on them, but he didn't want to stick around and check because the spiders might come back.  Myself, I feel that you should always search bodies, whether you killed them yourself or not.  You never know when a bottle of wine might be languishing somewhere, just begging for someone who could appreciate it to come along.
** The spiders in this cave can provide you with an inexhaustible supply of spidersilk, of high enough quality to be suitable for spellcasting. **
