Start

Starting the game

U6o is a client/server application. The server runs somewhere on the Internet, and the players use a client to connect to it. At the moment there is only one official client, which I will refer to as the client from now on. The client needs a screen resolution at least 1024x768, as the map area has been enlarged compared to U6, and the tiles are 32x32 instead of 16x16. The server lives at http://ultimasixonline.thezogcabal.com/ tcp port 174.110.175.251:22. Just start up the client, wait for it to initialize and make a connection with the server. Once you have a connection, music should start to play and the initial menu comes up. You’ll have 5 choices:

This will ask you to confirm and if you do the client exits.

This should be your first choice. It will set up your character, so the game knows what you are like.

This starts the game proper. If you’ve played before you can go straight into here; at the bottom of the screen it will show which username/password combination will be used to login

This choice allows you to type in a different username/password. Handy if you have more than 1 character.

This allows you to setup the way keys are used. As I’ll be using the standard keys throughout this manual, don’t go here.

After clicking the Create a Character button you get to give a username, password and character name. You can’t use TAB (yet) to change fields, click each of them in turn instead. Write your username and password down somewhere, in case you forget them. The character name is used a lot in the game, and the game is a bit anal about you mistyping it, so if your preferred name is a little long, better pick a shorter version of it to use here. Remember to capitalize it properly, or it will look weird in the game. Personally, I like to pretend Britannia really is a world out there and you as the avatar really go there. So I’m using my own name and not some obvious fantasy name. Consider doing the same. Of course, if you have an alias you use a lot online, you could use that too. Also consider not using some lame and obviously fake title as part of your name, no one will be really impressed, and you’ll be stuck with it. Remember humility is a virtue.

Pick the gender, look and portrait for your character. Unfortunately the choices are still rather limited at the moment, so you’re probably going to end up looking like some else whatever you pick.

You’ll then continue to the gypsy wagon, where your character will be mixed up. You’ll be asked 32 questions, and your answers will determine your characters attributes. Each question is a choice between two virtues, and since each virtue is derived from the three principles, which are in turn linked to STRength (Courage), DEXterity (Love), INTelligence (Truth).
Unfortunately, not all virtues are equal:

Honesty derives directly from Truth, and will give you 3 parts of INTelligence.
Compassion derives directly from Love and will give you 3 parts of DEXterity.
Valor derives directly from Courage, and will give you 3 parts of STRength.
Justice derives from Love and Truth, and will give you 1 part of DEX and 1 part of INT.
Sacrifice derives from Love and Courage, and will give you 1 part of DEX and 1 part of STR.
Honor derives from Truth and Courage, and will give you 1 part of INT and 1 part of STR.
Spirituality derives form all 3 principles, and will give you 1 part of INT, DEX and STR.
Humility is derived from the absence of all virtue, pointing to its opposite, Pride. So it doesn’t give you anything at all. Personally I think that it should give you something, like a multiplier to your experience earned, as life is harder for humble people. Something for a future version?

For your first character, make sure you only click on buttons that are blinking; these indicate choices that will give you as much points as possible. You’ll get a character that has the maximum available points for its three attributes combined, although none of them are very extreme. When you have to choose between two virtues that give the same amount of points, consider not taking the one that gives DEX, as that is relatively easy to increase later on. Also, I prefer STR over INT, although STR is slightly easier to get than INT later on, it is more useful than INT at first.

After character creation, if the game accepts your character, you will drop into the game, just like you will when journeying onward.

When you are creating a new character, please choose what you think will be a unique username and character name, as the client will not send them to the server until after you have gone through all the questions. If the server then finds that the name is already in use, you’ll be told to remake the character because the name is already in use. The official client doesn’t handle this nicely (it should just offer you to change the name and reconnect to the server.)

In U6O there are three types of sub-windows:

  1. The party roster which displays the sun, moons, wind direction, all party members’ portraits, HP, MP, an spellbook buttons (if a spellbook is equipped) and some basic status information (like being poisoned (green HP) or recovering from casting a spell (lightning symbol over the spellbook button)).

  2. The inventory which displays all attributes, your equipped items (on the paperdoll area), and inventory items. A separate one appears for each party member. It can be hidden (or redisplayed) by clicking on the relevant party member's face in the party roster.

  3. The spellbook which is used when casting a spell. A separate one appears for each party member that has at least one spellbook equipped. It can be hidden (or redisplayed) by clicking on the relevant spellbook button in the party roster.

All of these sub-windows may be dragged (moved to a different location) using the right mouse button. Just right click-and-hold, then move to the new position and release the mouse button. You can’t detach these windows yet, so if you have a larger screen than 1024x768, you can’t move the windows all the way out of the way. You can move them partially off-screen so they obscure the least amount of map as possible, while still showing you some useful data.

Interacting with the world works a little bit different than in Ultima 6. You’ll often need to select an item by left-clicking it, which will move it on your mouse. This is actually a special spot in your inventory, displayed on your mouse cursor. To select something this way, it must already be in your party’s inventory (either carried or equipped), or one of your party members must be standing next to it.

Once something is on your mouse, you can drop it into the inventory, either on an empty slot of a paperdoll that fits the item (don’t try to wear boots on your head, it won’t work), or into the inventory proper (the area of 16 circles).
If you drop something in the inventory proper, it will not appear where you dropped it, but at the top of the inventory instead, this can be confusing, especially if you’ve scrolled the inventory down a bit.
To drop or throw an item (currently being held on the mouse cursor) click on the place on the map that you wish to drop it. If this is not adjacent to a party member, you’ll attempt to throw it. Fragile items might break if thrown, so be careful.

Make sure you are STRong enough to carry items you drop into your inventory, or try to equip. The limit and currently used up allowance are shown in the inventory window.

WARNING! Don’t just pick up anything you see; stealing items makes you lose karma and if you lose enough of it, you won’t be able to finish the main quest of the game. If you lose a lot of karma, your character will be deleted.

Some items, like gold coins, torches, gems etc. stack in your inventory. A little number will show how many of them are in the stack. To pick up only a few, not the whole stack, you can use the shift key. This is used in two ways.
  1. To set the amount to pick up, press and hold the shift key, then type a number. Then release the shift key. This number is now set as the partial amount, that you can from now on use to pick up part of a stack.
  2. To pick up part of a stack, hold the shift key and then click on the stack you want to partially pick up on your mouse.
To change the shift amount, just type a new number while holding shift. You don’t actually need to release shift if you immediately want to use the new number to pick up part of a stack.

To manipulate items on the map, e.g. open doors, switch levers, pull switches, move up or down a ladder etc. press the U-key (mouse cursor will say use) then click on the item.
To use potions, keys, food, fishing rods etc. first pick the item up on your mouse, then press the U-key (mouse cursor will say use on) then click the person, place, item you wish to use it on. For example, use food on a party member to make them eat it, use the fishing rod on an ocean map tile to try and catch a fish, use a rune on a force field, use an empty bucket on a cow to milk it, etc. etc.
There is one special item, the staff, which you have to first equip, then press U, then click on the staff, and finally click on the target.

To look at something, press L (mouse cursor will say look). Then click where you want to look. It’s important to look at items before picking them up; if the server responds with  "Taking this is stealing!" you will lose karma if you put this item in your inventory. In general, items in dungeons are free to take, and items on the surface belong to people and are ‘stealing’.

To look inside a container, like a chest or a bag, press L and then click on the container.
If the container is in your inventory, you will look inside that container, (and the container will be displayed next to your head on the paperdoll. Click on it to move one container back up). You can now drop stuff into it, just like in your main inventory.

If the container is on the floor, everything inside the container will be dumped out, so you can get/move/look at the individual items. You might need to open some containers (with the use function) before being able to look inside them.

To talk, first press T; then type what you want to say, and press <enter> to say it. Everyone reasonably close will see your message in white. If you want to talk to everyone logged in, press Shift-T instead; after you press <enter>, everyone will see your message in blue. To avoid this being abused too much, you are limited to one of these global talks per 30 seconds. If you want to say something to just one person, press T as before, but instead of pressing <enter>, click on their sprite instead. They will see you message in pink.

To talk to a computer-controlled character (npc), you have to use this last form of talking specifically at them.

Npcs respond to keywords like name, job, bye, buy, sell and any words in their own conversation that are highlighted in red. If you just press T and then click on them without typing anything, it's the equivalent of saying hello to begin the conversation.

There are a few special words that you can say (using T) that are filtered out by the server to perform special functions. You must type these in capitals (and without the quotes). ‘WHO’ tells you which other players are currently in Britannia and ‘KAL LOR’ is a call for help, after a 1 minute delay you will be returned to Britain at the cost of one sixteenth of your experience points.

To attack something or some one, press A, then click on the target. Make sure you stand close enough to actually hit it with the weapon you have equipped. After you press A, numbers will appear above the first 10 potential target monsters. Instead of clicking on a target you may press a number key instead; this is very useful when targeting a moving enemy.
Note that there will never be numbers over locked chests, but you can attack them!
You can break off combat by pressing A twice or by pressing A and then clicking on yourself.

Before you can cast you will need to buy a spellbook, spells and reagents. After you have bought a spell, you need to put it in your spellbook. This works just like putting things in a normal container:  pick the spell up on your cursor, press L, click on the spellbook (must be in your inventory, not equipped), drop the spell into the spellbook by clicking in the area with the 16 circles.
Once you have at least one spell in your spellbook, equip the book and the spellbook window will appear. To cast a spell, click on the spell you wish to cast in the spellbook window. The blue number shows how many times you can cast it with the reagents you have. The cursor will change into a lightning bolt. Then click on the target you wish to cast it at. If the spell is an attack spell, small numbers will appear above the first 10 targets; if you want you can press the number key instead of clicking on the target.

You can also set a few spells as ‘favorites’ and bind them to function keys. To do this, click on the spell, then hold <shift> and press a key from F5 to F12, the key is now a shortcut to that spell. By pressing the key (without <shift>), if you are holding a spellbook with that spell it will select it for casting.

You can cancel an action by pressing <esc>, this changes the mouse cursor back to the normal arrow.
Press S to turn sound and music on or off. This will be changed soon to allow independent control of sound and music volumes.
You can switch between the 1024x768 window and a half-size window 512x384 by pressing the M key. The half-size window scales down the new 32x32 tiles everything, instead of using the original 16x16 tiles, so it doesn’t look to great. Also the letters are too small to read, as the font doesn’t scale down nicely. Still, it can be useful to have this functionality, especially if you only running at 1024x768, and the client runs full-screen.
Press Q to quit. You’ll need to confirm you really meant it.

Controls
A

Global Press Shift T instead of T, then type something, then press enter, it will go to everybody in u6o anywhere in the world. NOTE: you only get 1 global message per minute, to stop people flooding the screen, so say everything you want to say all in one message

For newbies:

Make your character carefully because it is very hard to change much later and if you answer wrong, youll really regret it when your at lvl 5 or whatever and it will take ages to get another level(to increase a stat), or ages to start over(and get back to where you were) you dont really need to read the question, just look at the answer and figure out which 2 virtues it is piting against each other.
e.g.: Q10:
Thee and thy friends have been routed and ordered to retreat. In defiance of thy orders, dost thou:
(a)Stop in Compassion to aid a wounded companion
(b)Sacrifice thyself to slow the pursuing enemy, so others can escape
QUESTION(a/b)10=...
so if you answer a, you'll get the stat bonuses of compassion(+3 dex), or b is the stat bonuses of sacrifice(+1 str, +1 dex)
Honesty: int+3 (not to be confused with honour)
Compassion: dex+3
Valour: str+3
Justice: str+1,int+1
Sacrifice:str+1,dex+1
Honour:dex+1,int+1 (not to be confused with honesty)
Spirituality:str+1,dex+1,int+1
Humility: nothing (so avoid this)

STR effects how much you can wield, and carry
DEX effects how much you hit(rather than miss), and how much you dodge(rather than get hit), and also slightly how fast you attack
INT effects how often your spells fail, and how powerful they are. Also effects how much mana you have, and how fast it recharges
at first, get a high str and high dex(say around 20). int doesnt matter that much yet, you cant do much with spells anyway.
if you have 24 STR, you can wield all the best items in the game, so try to get either exactly 21 or exactly 24, because you can increase it by multiples of 3.
To level up, get enough XP, then go to a shrine. Different shrines give different bonuses to different stats, but they always all give an extra 30 HP.
You need to get a rune (which you should figure out how to get for yourself, thats half the fun)
Stand next to the altar and use the rune on the forcefield(the pink thing)
grab the moonstone the best shrines give a total of 3 bonus to stats, they are:
COMPASSION(+3DEX): east of britain
VALOUR(+3STR):just south of jhelom. if you dont know where this is, youll nbeed a guide to get you there
HONESTY(+3INT):NE of lycaseum, hard to get to, and hard to ge the rune for.
SPIRITUALITY(+1INT,+1STR,+1DEX), only accessable by moongate. i might add more here later, but for now, avoid moongates, because unless you know what your doing, you'll probably get trapped for ages.

Connection problems:

If you dont see a session, then the host is probably down, or dns.txt is wrong, check that the 1st line of dns.txt Is
174.110.175.251:22 if it is, then theres nothing you can do except tell me or wait Cear to notice. If you see a session but when you jon you get a black screen, with a sun in the corner and 2 arrows, there are 2 causes:
·  Directplay (the networking functions used in u6o) is having a fit.
You can try a few things, depending on how you connect to the internet.
If you are using a router, then try turning OFF DHCP. you can turn it right back on again though.
If this doesnt work either, try turning on port forwarding on ports 2300 through 2400. how to do this varies from router to router.
If this doesnt work, try rebooting your computer(and router if you have one), this normally fixes the problem, but not always.
If all else fails, just wait a while and try again later
·  The other possibility is that the server has crashed but hasnt realised, so it says it has a session, but wont let you play.

GAMEPLAY TIPS:

GENERAL TIPS:

Check the forums for other newbie guides, i have tried to add everything that was there when i made this, but it may be out of date now
STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING THAT CASTS SPELLS AT YOU. if you see somthing ly at you, like a lighning bolt, fireball, or magic arrow (there are no mormal arrows by monsters yet) then stay away from that place. spells will easily take off 30 HP in 1 go.
empty your buckets. carrying around a full bucket is useless, and heavy, drink it and it will be much lighter The ammount of xp you get from something is proportional to how hard it is. it goes:
Experience goes: Rabbit / Acid Slug / Rat < Snake < Rot Worm < Slime / Child < Mouse / Dog / Cat / Wolf < Gremlin / Giant Spider < Insect / Bat < Ghost / Gazer / Giant Ant < Skeleton < Tangle Vine / Giant Scorpion < Troll / Swashbuckler / Headless / Fighter < Alligator < Mage < Cyclops / Gargoyle / Hydra < Reaper < Mongbat < Giant Squid / Drake < Winged Gargoyle < Sea Serpent < Daemon < Dragon < Silver Serpent. The rest don't give experience

Get some swamp boots. then if you walk over a swamp, you dont get poisoned. If somehow you do get poisoned, go to lord brittish and he will cure you once you have passed his questions (the answers to which can be found all over here if you have)

KARMA:
Every time you lie or steal, you loose karma. if your karma goes too low, your character is automatically, permanently deleted...... try to avoid this, because it means you will have to start over.

I think you only get about 30 or 40 lies or thefts your entire life, most of which will be accidental, typing your name wrong when someone asks you (or even not realising they asked your name, and not trying to spell your name) or picking up things which you thought were not stolen, and there are not very many ways to increase your karma again.

Starting out:
get a higher level player to help you.. you really have no chance on your own, even if your experienced and know what to do. Although, you could steal some stuff like wands and armour, but watch out for karma death, only steal what you NEED.
You only get XP if you are the one to make the final blow. and you loose 1/4th of your XP when you die so the trick is... To kill without dying. A level 1 is useless against most enemies. so even a rat or mouse will probably poison you, and you will eventually die, because poison does not wear off so go after rabits, kill em all, there are some southwest of britain, and some east, try to lure monsters ONE AT A TIME only. do this by walking slowly up to where they are, then as soon as you see them run away a bit. Repeat until only 1 chases you.

Using items
To use an item ON something,(such as to eat something). hold the item on your mouse. Press U (for use). Click what you want to use the item on (such as yourself)

FOOD:
When you eat something, it makes you start healing very slowly, about 1 hp every 30 seconds.
Different foods last for different lengths of time, and eating more food makes you keep healing for longer.
there is no way to make yourself heal FASTER,only for longer. healing can stack for up to an hour i think.
there are many ways to get food:
·  Get a bucket, use the bucket on the cow (which fills the bucket with milk), then use the bucket on yourself (which drinks the milk). repeat this a few times, cows give unlimited milk, so stack up.
you CAN kill the cows, but then you cant drink from them
instead, go and kill some deer, there are some north of britain(the starting town), through the mountains, but watch out for wolves.
Slaughter Domestic Animals for Food

COMBAT:
To attack something, Press A, then click what you want to attack. This is hard to do on a moving target, so click a little ahead of it, how far ahead depends on your lag.
But, what you can do.. because targetting the ground doesn't stop attacking your target, press A and click near it and then repeat this a bunch of times. chances are, one of these times you will hit it.
Rule of thumb for newbies: If it's red or green and trying to kill you, run like hell. Except if it's a slime. If it's brown, kick its ass! Unless it's a mongbat.

Where to hunt?
For a level 1, look north of britain, normally through the mountains., theres plenty of monsters up here such as wolves, which are ok to take 1 at a time, then wait for the food you ate to heal you again... its slow, but really your only choice if your alone.
Heres something i copied from the forums:, just the relevant snippets
Towards Skara Brae are 3 rabbits, some wolves, 2 cats and further down some enemy npc's and mongbats (avoid! Don't go past the 2 cats!). Towards Paws is a dog and about 4 wolves. East of the spawn point across the little bit of river but not along the path, is 3 snakes and 3 rabbits. Northeast of Britain is a field with, if you explore it, many wolves and dogs - this is probably the best place for levelling up to level 2, if you're careful (run away far enough so only one enemy follows you onto the next screen). North of Britain is Dungeon Despise, with mice on the first level (avoid the second) and bats out the front. Also there's Nicodemus's house - he sells spells, and there are 6 Gremlins in the area around his house. NW of Britain are Cyclopses (avoid!). In the sewers are many rats, of course (the further down you go the more there are), but don't go south on level 2 - there's cyclopses. (Level 3 is safer than that area!).
Visit the sewers at least once to Level 1 - there's a free bucket, basket and Honey Jar if you look around. (these aren't stolen items) Buckets are useful for milking cows, as said earlier, and making walls to protect yourself from enemies. Honey Jars should be kept to use on beehives at Empath Abbey or Minoc - better than cows too, because they don't move! Make sure you spend about 3 or minutes each time just feeding - it'll keep healing you for several hours.
To start with, make sure your character has good DEX and STR (around about 18 in both, not too much lower). INT can be raised later - you won't need it for the first few levels.
It's best to run behind enemies if they're too powerful - lure them back the way they came, then run away. But if there's too many...just run.
For the first few levels, to level up make sure someone escorts you or you are invisible (and fast)! Simply use the rune on the shrine, talk to it, say 'yes', '(your name)' then '(mantra)', then run! Don't wait for the conversation to finish!
Two weapons are better than one. Ditch the shield.
Archery stuff is pretty useless at the moment, unless you can lure a bunch of stuff to a building, then lock yourself in with 5000 arrows and mow them down, but chances are youll run out of arrows, then be trapped, and die
If you need a ranged weapon and can't find a lightning/fire wand, find a sling. It's unlimited.

Bottle necks
A bottleneck is a place where monsters can only come at you one at a time. try to stand in a place where this will happen
use an object to block off the passageways, such as buckets(which are also handy to milk cows with), and then shoot over them at nearby monsters. when they are all dead on the other side, pick up the object for a second or 2, to lure more monsters to the slaughter
Although this is a little unrealistic, it works, and there is no other way for newbs to get to level 2.
just remember, if a monster can only attack you diagonally, they wont rush in, but if they do stand there, they will stay and attack
so if you have 2 in front of you, one of which is diagonal, kill the diagonal one first, becuase his place wont be refilled straight away.

SPELLS

Spells you SHOULD have (keeping in mind Level 1 players can only use 1st Circle, and so forth):

L1: Cure, Heal, Harm. Maybe Light
L2: Unlock Magic, Magic Arrow and Maybe Telekinesis.
L3: Fireball and Maybe Great Light. (protection does not work!)
L4: Great Heal! (mass cure does not work yet and isn't that useful - how the heck do you get several people poisoned simultaneously with swamp boots?)
L5: EXPLOSION!!!!(kills everything in a circles all in 1 hit, but dont go crazy with it, it costs 11gp in reagents per shot) and Invisibility, unless you have many rings Maybe Lightning., but its about the same as fireball, except less things are resiliant to it
L6: This circle is completely useless right now as none of these spells work!
L7: Kill! Keep your eye on Gate Travel, if it ever works, it'll be a godsend.
L8: Resurrect! The others are somewhat useful. That is, if they worked. Which I all but guarantee they do not.
